Anti-Corrosion Coatings — 50% Better Salt Spray Resistance

Optimized lamellar zinc powder improved flake alignment and barrier protection in zinc-rich primer coatings.

The Challenge

An industrial coatings manufacturer producing zinc-rich primers for marine and offshore steel structures was facing two persistent problems:

  • Poor adhesion on blast-cleaned steel substrates due to irregular zinc particle shapes
  • Non-uniform coverage causing localized corrosion after 1,500 hours of salt spray exposure (below the 3,000-hour target)

The Solution

LSBT supplied a custom-processed lamellar zinc powder with optimized aspect ratio for improved flake alignment within the coating matrix. Technical specifications:

  • Lamellar morphology — platelet-shaped particles create overlapping barrier layers
  • Controlled aspect ratio — 10:1 to 15:1 for optimal packing and barrier effect
  • Zn 99.8% purity — low impurity content prevents galvanic hotspots
  • Surface treatment option — silane coupling agent for enhanced polymer adhesion

Featured Products

ZINC Powder (Zn 99.8%) — Air/water atomized, irregular morphology, 1.5-3.5 g/cm³ apparent density. Custom surface treatments available.

Also used: Aluminium Flake Powder for hybrid zinc-aluminum coatings with enhanced sacrificial protection.

Adhesion Rating (ISO 2409)

After switching to LSBT's lamellar zinc powder, the customer's zinc-rich primer consistently exceeded 3,000 hours in ASTM B117 salt spray testing — a 50% improvement over their previous formulation. Adhesion ratings improved to ISO 2409 Grade 0 (no detachment).
